- At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we had another pretty great weekend. While the weather was not as beautiful as last weekend, it was fairly nice for February, and we made the most of it. Jeremy's work schedule changed this week, so for the first time in several years, he was home with us on Friday night. The new schedule will be great because we won't have to wait on him to sleep in on Saturday mornings (to catch up from working until 1 a.m. the night before).
- We went to breakfast Saturday morning, the stopped in to browse at a local furniture store (new living room furniture coming soon--hooray!). We kept asking the girls if they liked this couch or that one, etc. I guess it was sinking in, because as I was buckling Mackenzie in her carseat, she started signing "more" and saying, "more couches, more couches!". I promised her we could come back to look again soon.
- The girls fell asleep on the way home from Sunday lunch, as usual. Mackenzie, however, kept waking up when Jeremy tried to put her in bed, so she came to bed with me. (I hadn't slept well Saturday night, so I was desparate for a good afternoon nap!) She laid quietly for awhile, then started humming and talking to herself. She tried sticking her finger up my nose, then when she realized I was trying to sleep, she kept putting her finger up and saying "shhhhh". She ended up in the living room with her daddy after that! (Wise choice...she never did go back to sleep.)
- Despite Mackenzie's 15 minute nap, both girls were in a great mood in the afternoon and thanks to nice weather, we were able to get a bit more outside playtime. My cousin Lindsey brought her dogs over to visit, and Addison & Mackenzie had a blast playing in the yard with them.
- Watching my girls run and laugh in beautiful sunshine restores my soul like nothing else can. I vow right now to enjoy every second of spring weather we might be lucky enough to have.
- We caught up with 21st-century technology last week when we broke down and got a DVR. Now, I realize this is by no means a necessity and probably doesn't fit with my theme of simplifying this year. I must say, though, we are LOVING it. Totally worth the small extra fee we are paying for it. And in all actuality, if simplifying means cutting down to only the things you really love, tv definitely stays on my list. : )
- I have been feeling the urge to get back to some of my languishing craft projects lately. I completed Valentine's shirts for Addison & Mackenzie last night, and I am pretty proud of the finished product, especially considering the entire project only took about an hour. Several people asked about these shirts when I mentioned them awhile back, so this time I took step-by-step pictures. I plan to post a tutorial tomorrow, so be sure to check back and learn how to make your own.

Monday Musings...
Last week, I caught wind of a blog post published on Marie Claire's website that caused a pretty massive uproar among readers all over the internet. The title of the article? "Should 'Fatties' Get a Room? (Even on TV?)" Yes, seriously, that is the title. A national women's magazine, one that claims to support women in all aspects of life, published an article containing the word fatties in the title. What exactly is the purpose of a post like that, if not to embarrass and offend?
The blogger admits she has never seen Mike and Molly, the show that sparked this discussion of fat people on tv, yet she claims that by watching this show, we must be "implicitly promoting obesity". OK...obviously obesity is unhealthy and costs millions of dollars per year in healthcare expenses...but most people don't want to be overweight, and none of that, NOTHING, in fact, makes it okay to belittle someone like that author talks about overweight people in her post. Did she take even a fraction of a second to think about how the actors on that show might feel while reading the cruel things she wrote about them? Not likely.
This all took place on the website of a NATIONAL MAGAZINE, I feel it bears repeating...if it were on her personal blog, it would still be distasteful (to me), but we all have the right to express our opinions. The part that I am absolutely outraged over is that the editors at Marie Claire allowed this writer to post this hateful, judgmental, offensive drivel on their site. That, to me, is unforgivable, and I will ensure that I do not spend my money on their publication anytime soon.
The quote from this poorly-written article that raised my blood pressure the most? That would be this one:
Also? "Heroine"=feminine version of hero. I am fairly certain she meant to say "heroin", as in the drug.
Is Mike and Molly classy, intelligent, outstanding tv? No. Jeremy and I find it entertaining enough to fill the 8:30 timeslot on Monday nights, and I will forever be a fan of Melissa McCarthy (previously known as Sookie from Gilmore Girls ...where her weight was never made an issue, I might add). Are we inspired to gain weight until we are obese and driven to join Overeaters Anonymous like the characters on the show? Hardly. I guess we didn't quite get the "glorifying obesity" message of the show.
I didn't really mean to write an entire post on this stupid article, but obviously, it got under my skin. Almost as much as the homophobic Arkansas school board member who posted on his Facebook page that he enjoyed that homosexuals "often give each other AIDS and die." I won't go into that one here...one post can only handle so much discussion of ignorance and hate. Thankfully, he resigned, though I fear a LOT of damage was already done.
As for me, I'm heading out to find something to lower my blood pressure! : )
What do you think about the 'Fatties' article? Are you shocked and outraged like me, or do you see the other side of the issue? (Don't be afraid to disagree!) What has your blood boiling this week? Let it out...it feels good!

So anyway, yes, I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair.

Why my house is always a mess...
All I can say is, thank goodness for the return of new primetime television. I was reaching my limit on House Hunters and The Nanny reruns. I really do love both of those shows, but if I had to watch one more cute, filthy rich, 30-year-old couple search for a million-dollar vacation home in Nicaragua, I might puke. (Spoiler alert: She always wants luxury; he's always concerned about price. They usually end up 'compromising' on the house she likes best.)
There are not a lot of new shows I am excited about this season, but I am very glad to see my old favorites...

The first two episodes of the second season of Glee have been pretty outstanding, in my opinion. Glee is definitely a 'love-it-or-hate-it' show, and I am firmly in the love-it category. Yes, it is absurd at times, but reliving all that high school angst is a fun hour-long escape from real life. Last night's Britney/Brittany was hilarious, and I actually got a strange look from A & M for laughing out loud during their quiet time before bed.

Grey's has been a favorite of mine for several years now. The show has had its ups and downs, but I will freely admit that I cry at some point during every single episode. Last season was a pretty good one, in my opinion, but I think this season is going to be even better.

The addition of this beautiful piece of work, Dr. Jackson Avery, certainly won't hurt my opinion of the show. Isn't he gorgeous?? And Sarah Drew is a favorite from the Everwood days, so I am interested to see what they do with her as well.
Some more recommendations, both old and new:

The Big Bang Theory (HILARIOUS!)

How I Met Your Mother

Parenthood
Sadly, there are a couple more shows in my weekly rotation, but these are my current favorites.
Your turn... What's on your must-see list this fall??

Thursday Evening Snippets
Thursdays are one of my favorite days of the week. It's almost the end of the week, there's anticipation of Friday and the coming weekend, and there's awesome tv on Thursday nights. Oh, and it's our more casual dress day at work...that helps too.
Speaking of tv, I have a confession to make...I don't watch American Idol or Lost. Like, not at all, ever. My top Thursday night shows are Bones, Grey's Anatomy, and The Office (which I usually watch online over the weekend). But, yeah, I'm missing out on those two pop-culture phenomenons. AI just isn't my thing...I don't care for reality tv in general. I hear good things about Lost, and I know it has quite a following. I didn't watch it when it first came on, then I felt like it was too much trouble to try and catch up. Once this last season is over, I'm thinking I might watch the entire series from the beginning on DVD. Of course, that means I will have to avoid spoiler-type talk about the ending, but I think I can do it. Do you watch Lost? Would you recommend it for my summertime tv-on-DVD obsession?
We don't have any big plans for the weekend, other than to continue getting things in order around the house. I'm looking forward to making some progress while Jeremy is home to entertain the babies. So far, I'm doing better at keeping the house picked up and keeping up with the laundry, dishes, etc. It's a job just to keep up with that during the week though, so I haven't gotten a whole lot of organizing/unpacking done. Instead of letting our laundry pile up until I have nothing left to wear and then having a massive washing/drying/folding party, I've come to the realization that if I just do one load of laundry each weeknight I can stay caught up. Imagine that! ONE load is not overwhelming, I can easily toss it in before I fix my supper, then fold and put away right before bed. Now, if I can just make myself stick with it...
For the last bit of randomness on this Thursday night, I wanted to pass along two posts that have made me both laugh and cry this week. This one, from one of my favorite blogs, made me a little-misty-eyed, but in a good way. This post is of a different variety than the first, but it is absolutely one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking, and emotional stories I have ever read. Don't forget the kleenex.

A "Me" Day
Tomorrow is Veteran's Day, which means I have a day off work in the middle of the week. Wednesday is also the day Mackenzie and Addison stay with my mother-in-law, which is pretty much the only time she gets to spend with them on a regular basis. So....I decided to do something I have not done much at all since the girls were born....I'm going to have some ME time.
When they get up in the morning, I will be taking the girls to NiNi's house, then coming back home to spend several glorious hours ALONE. Am I a terrible mother for being very excited about that?? (Just so you know, I'm kidding-I'm actually a proponent of getting a little time away every once in awhile!) I have left the babies with family to go shopping or run errands, and Jeremy and I have been on a couple (as in TWO) dates since they were born, but truthfully, I'm pretty sure this will be the first time I have had a few hours to myself with no expectations of getting any sort of task accomplished and no plans to be anywhere.
What am I going to do with this blissful, unscheduled time? Most likely, I will end up back on the couch, in my pajamas, watching some tv. (Hard to believe that less than a year ago, I spent an entire day on the couch watching Bones for 14 hours straight) I might even get ambitious and watch one of the netflix I've had laying around for going on three months now. If I'm not too busy being incredibly lazy, I might pick up a long-neglected craft project that I haven't had a chance to work on since the girls arrived. That probably won't actually happen, though...I'm pretty sure I will be a couch potato all morning, and I will enjoy every single minute. Sometime after lunch, I will go get my babies and I will kiss and smooch and squeeze them because I missed them SO MUCH all morning long. : )
What would YOU do with a day to yourself??

Old School
I found this clip from the Jimmy Fallon show a few weeks ago from a link on Facebook. Mark-Paul Gosselar appeared on the show in character as Zack Morris from Saved By the Bell. I cracked up the first time I watched it, so I had to share.
I finally remembered to show it to Jeremy the other night, and it got me thinking about the old school shows we obsessed over growing up. Jeremy and I were (are?) Saved By the Bell fans, and we can both remember watching episode after episode after school and on Saturday mornings. We have without a doubt watched every episode of the high school years...I won't even go into the tragedy that was the attempt at the "college years." (We may or may not still turn on TBS in the morning at least once a week to get our Bayside fix.)
Another show I remember watching over and over again, particularly in the afternoon after school, was The Brady Bunch. I would get off the school bus, get a snack (honey bun and Dr. Pepper...my eating habits have not changed much!), call up my best friend Sarah, and settle in to watch 3 or 4 episodes of The Brady Bunch. I could also be found flipping over to Full House during commercial breaks.
My college years were marked by a hard-core devotion to the Golden Girls. I watched it most every morning, afternoon, and night back when it was on 20 or so times a day. There was a marathon on over Labor Day weekend...GG might have played on our tv for abou 12 hours or so. Is it bad that my favorite part of a sick day is watching reruns with my favorite old ladies?
I'm always looking for shows I might have missed, then watch the series on dvd (love me some Netflix!) What are your favorite old-school shows? Any I might have missed out on?

"Office" Love
Well, I'm almost a week late, but I had to mention last Thursday's season premiere of The Office. It was a long, dry summer without my favorite paper company, but the premiere did not disappoint! I just love Angela, even more so after watching some of her short videos on the NBC website. I thought she was fabulous in this episode, dialing up Dwight for covert meetings every time Andy mentioned their wedding. I wouldn't think anyone but Dwight would be nuts enough to work with Angela, but Andy is a pretty close second. Still, I like Angela and Dwight together...
And, of course, I have to mention the couple everyone waited three months to see again...Jim and Pam, naturally. How sweet was that proposal in the rain??? And I have to admit, I really didn't see it coming. I'm wondering if the writers are going to stir up some trouble for the happy couple. I'm sure they probably will, but I hope it's nothing too dramatic.
I'm not too sure I like Ryan being back, but it's kind of funny watching him try to apologize to everyone. I loved how Kelly totally blew him off. Oh, and Michael and Holly= Cute!
All in all, I'm looking forward to a great season!!

My Favorite '80s Star
is back! At lucnch today, I saw an advertisement for a new series on ABC Family starring none other than...Molly Ringwald!! In case the excessive use of exclamation points doesn't give it away, I love me some Molly Ringwald. In middle school, my friend Sarah and I literally wore out our copy of The Breakfast Club. Our other favorite was For Keeps, one of Molly Ringwald's lesser-known films...which I am about to go add to my Netflix because I haven't seen it in about twelve years or so. I wonder if I will still think it's a good movie?
Anyway, our Pretty in Pink princess will be playing a mom in a show called The Secret Life of the American Teenager. I went to the show's website, and it looks like it could have some potential. It was created by Brenda Hampton, who also created 7th Heaven (a show which, according to the ABC Family site, "pretty much defined teen drama in the '90s"...I'm not sure I'd take it that far, but hey, the show lasted for ten years, so I will let that one slide!). Like most made-for-cable shows, The Secret Life of the American Teenager will probably be either fairly entertaining or really bad. I guess we'll have to wait until July 1 to find out, but I'm excited to see Molly back in action!
Speaking of cable shows, I'm kind of sad to admit it, but one I can't help watching is Tyler Perry's House of Payne. Jeremy started watching it last year, and I grudgingly found myself enjoying the new episodes on Wednesday nights. The show tackles some pretty tough topics with a lot of taste...and with a lot of humor, of course, in true Tyler Perry style. I can no longer say I only watch it with Jeremy though, since I found myself flipping it on last Wednesday when I was home alone. Oh well, if I had to add another show to my list at least it's a family show!

Thoughts...
I generally do not get into reality shows on tv. I have never watched Survivor, not even in the beginning, I do not watch The Bachelor or any of its spinoffs, and I have never watched more than 2-3 episodes of American Idol. I know AI is one of the biggest pop-culture trends of recent years, but reality tv is just not something I have any desire to follow. (Side note: Last May, I had the opportunity to spend the day with Taylor Hicks when he came to Scottsboro to promote the Goosepond Island development. Two days after he was here, he performed on the AI season finale, which was the very first time I ever heard him sing! Thankfully, he didn't ask any questions related to AI or his performances while I was shuttling him around, so I didn't have to admit I had no idea what he sounded like.) I say all of this to give a general idea of how much I typically dislike reality shows. I realize that some of the better ones (The Biggest Loser, Extreme Home Makeover, etc.) actually serve a higher purpose than the sex and scandal that seem to compose many others, and those are not the ones I rant against. Still, I get frustrated that the genre consumes so much of the networks' time and budgets now.
However...(you knew that was coming somewhere, right?)...last summer I began making an exception for a little jewel I discovered called Design Star on HGTV. I got sucked in to an episode after House Hunters, and I couldn't help coming back for more. Does it even count as a reality show? I am not sure, but I love it even more for leaving out most of the personal dramas and focusing on the competition and the designers' talents. Basically, the show throws together a group of designers, who move into a house together and compete in a series of challenges to find the next star. The winner gets their own show on HGTV. I like that some of the contestants are professional designers, while others just do it as a hobby. In fact, last year's winner was a hair stylist who just happened to have a talent for design. Also, the judges are a talented group (including my favorite, Cynthia Rowley), who really know their field. They are never demeaning or brutalizing with their critiques; they just judge what they see and offer some tips to help the contestant in the future. I know it sounds a little boring from my description, but trust me, it's not! The new season begins June 8, so check it out if you've never seen it.

Wonderful Thursdays
Tonight is the season finale of The Office, which I have been looking forward to all week! I guess it's a little bittersweet, the season beginning and ending again so soon, but at least we get an hour-long episode to enjoy. The season finale of Ugly Betty is tonight also, and I am interested to see where it goes. I have been finished with school for over a week now, so I get to go straight home and prepare for my favorite night of television. Unfortunately, my husband will not be joining me since his off days have changed, but at least we have Sunday to look forward to.
Lest you think I do nothing more than numb my brain with (fantastic) television, I have been doing quite a bit more reading lately also. I finished Lucky, which is author Alice Sebold's account of her own real-life rape and the aftermath. It was a difficult read at times, but a good start to easing me back into my old reading habits. I have moved on to a couple of paperback mystery-types to fill the time until I decide what to go after next.
This weekend will be a busy one: graduates' reception, preparations for said reception on Saturday, and I also hope to get Jeremy's birthday present Saturday while I am in town. My sister should be coming home either late Sunday or Monday, and I am hoping to take off a day next week to spend some time with her. For now, I am off for home to prepare for a wonderful relaxing evening.

For now, I am off for home to prepare for a wonderful relaxing evening.

Triumphant Return
I have been trying to write this thoughtful, creative post about my slightly conflicted emotions over the return of scripted television. However, it has been quite a busy week and I have not made much progress with my creative post, despite multiple attempts. So I give up. I will do a nice post on the conflicting emotions and my new (slightly unhealthy?) enthusiasm for tv on DVD another day.
For now, just let me say that I am beyond excited that The Office is back! What a glorious night it was three weeks ago when I sat down to watch the first new episode in more than four months. I am a recent Office junkie; I got caught up the craze during the aforementioned tv on DVD phase during the writers' strike. Now I am wondering what took me so long? Nevermind, it's beside the point now. I am here to stay.
Because I teach on Thursday nights I have not watched last night's episode yet. Thanks to online viewing, that is not a problem. I plan to enjoy both The Office and Grey's Anatomy before long. Last week's episode of The Office just happens to have grabbed a spot on my list of favorites. It was a perfect mix of office craziness and Jim and Pam loveliness. And everyone's favorite couple was particularly lovely last week. When Jim started hinting about an engagement, I was literally bouncing up and down on the couch, telling Jeremy, "he's totally serious!!" It was not one of my finer moments. And still...he was totally serious! The reviewer on EW.com thought it was a little creepy that Jim bought a ring the week they started dating. I disagree. I think it is a perfect indication of Jim's devotion to Pam and their relationship. We know he's in it for real. I can't wait to watch last night's episode.
I am also excited about Brothers & Sisters returing, even though I fell asleep and didn't get to watch Sunday's episode. I will also have to catch it online before this Sunday. That show has great writing, controversial yet relevant topics, and best of all, Sally Field. She's absolutely fantastic as Norah, the family matriarch. The other actors are strong and talented as well, making for an engaging hour of television.
All in all, I think it is going to be an enjoyable month or so, until the summer hiatus. I am ignoring the talk of a possible actors' strike in the fall, hoping it will fade away before I have to get too concerned. If it does happen, I guess it's back to DVD for me. There are a couple of other shows I have missed out on that I have considered catching on DVD. I hear Lost is good....

I was trying to be neutral, but....
Okay, so the writers' strike has been going on for about 5 weeks or so now, I think, and until now, I haven't really paid extremely close attention. A few weeks ago, Entertainment Weekly printed a timeline showing how many new episodes of popular shows were remaining (meaning the shows that were scripted before the strike went into effect). I noticed a only meager few episodes of favorites such as Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and Brothers & Sisters were remaining. That got me thinking about what an impact the strike could (would) actually have on tv watchers, but it was not until this past week that the reality of the predicament hit me. I am left to ponder what might happen on all three of the aforementioned shows, without a clue as to when episodes might resume. Don't get me wrong...I know the wait for new television is not really all that big of a deal, and there are much more important things happening in the world at this very moment. But for me, a person who enjoys nothing more than unwinding with a well-written and well-performed episode of a favorite tv show, it's definitely high on my list of current complaints. Worse still, reps for the studios and executives apparently walked out of negotiation talks this weekend, leaving us with absolutely no end in sight.
No longer will I reserve my judgment as to who's in the right or who should cave to the other's demands...for the sake of great television (and movies, too!), give the writers what they want! I think they have proved their point; without writers, television studios are left to create even more senseless, brain-numbing reality shows, and we most certainly don't need anymore of those. (Can you tell I think most reality tv is contributing to the downfall of American popular culture?? Just my opinion...) From what I have read, the Writer's Guild of America is holding out for a bigger stake in the profits of DVDs, downloads, etc. (all of which are getting larger thanks to changing media capabilities). The writers have proven they are the backbone of the industry, and without them everything comes to a standstill. Just give them the profit they deserve. Please?? Until then, I guess I will be forced to catch up on my tv on DVD.
