The Name Game

I am not a namer of things.

I have never named my car, household items, or other possessions.  I used to deliberate for weeks over naming a pet, and that name was quite likely to change multiple times over the animal's life span.  (We had a lot of barn cats, so they came and went fairly often.)

The names I remember from childhood?  I had a cat named "Kiss" (who turned out to be a boy, by the way, and is also responsible for the small scar on my chin), an indoor cat named "Smokey", and imaginary friends named, I kid you not, "Gartserts" and "Sitserts"...pronounced like they sound.

So, yeah, not a champion namer here.  It's a miracle Jeremy and I decided on the girls' names with relatively little argument.

What's the point of all my rambling about names?  I need a name for my Kindle!  The poor thing is still going by the boring, corporate-bestowed name of "Deanna's Kindle".  (If you don't know...the name of your Kindle shows in the top of the screen and is used when managing your Kindle online.)

I would kind of like a literary or pop-culture name for my Kindle.  A few I've thought of so far include:  Darcy (from Pride and Prejudice), Harper (as in To Kill a Mockingbird author Harper Lee), and McDreamy (Grey's Anatomy).  Obviously, I am not completely sure if my Kindle is male or female.

Are you a namer?  What strange names have you used in the past?  Do you have any suggestions for my beloved Kindle's name??

Also, speaking of reading, if anyone else is interested in joining Marcia and I in reading Crazy Love, we are starting on Tuesday.  Visit our book blog for more details.  We would love to have you join us!

  1. I'm not entirely sure why, but this post just makes me laugh! Maybe it's the names of your imaginary friends...hahaha!!!

So I'm way out of the loop here, as I don't have any kind of electronic reading device, nor did I know that you are supposed to name them...so take this with a chunk of salt...

I like the name Harper - sophisticated with a nod to the Great State of Alabama.

And for some reason, the name Cade (or Kade, if you wanted a "K" like Kindle) pops into my head.

And now I'm laughing at myself for having given this some serious thought! :) :)

  2. Hahahahaha - like you and Mandy, I have never named a thing in my life, except the babies :)

    I also like Harper!

But I don't have any electronic devices besides my 4 year old phone and my laptop :)

  4. I name ALOT of things. I use said names in conversations. I often don't tell other people with whom I'm having conversations that this "person" is really an inanimate object.

My cars have been names by the first letters of their plates, I've called icky bugs I've killed unfavorable people from my past, I constantly give nick names. It's a bad habit! I named my i.pods Lyric and Kadence, like a drum cadence. I have no name suggestions, but I suggest going to a baby name site and searching for a name meaning book, reader, or librarian.

  5. If it were me, I would give it the name of a favorite protagonist. I loved Lisbeth from the "Girl with the Dragon Tatoo" series. I also have a soft spot for "Catcher in the Rye" and would consider the name Holden.

  7. I named my computer Adam West. I would think of adjectives for your Kindle, then perhaps it would be easier to think of a name, or someone else that has those same qualities?

  8. "Krazy, Beautiful Kindle"

    That's my thought.
